CHARACTERISTICS

Highly decorative style, carving such as linenfold paneling: used indigenous woods and materials

MOTIFS

Tracery (interlaced ornament, especially stonework or Gothic window), pinnacles, pointed arches, arcading, trefoils, and quatrefoils (asymmetrical leaves resembling a 3 leaf clover (trefoil) 4 leaves quatrefoils).

ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT

Early Gothic style from Romanesque architecture. Flourished in Italy until c1400: Northern Europe and Iberian Peninsula until late 15th/early 16th century. Revived as a light, very decorative style in England from the 1740’s known as Gothick: Revivals seen in Europe from 1820’s North America from 1840’s.
