  POST MODERN – CONTEMPORARY

PERIOD

1970 ONWARDS

CHARACTERISTICS

Asymmetry – colour – simple form – popular culture – unique crafts – humour – new minimalism – surface decoration – mixing materials

PRODUCT DESIGN

From furniture to ceramics and from glass to kitchen gadgets – The post modern style began with Alchimia – Studio Alchimia was formed when designers Alessandro and Adriana Guerriero invited a number of their friends to design some new work to include their work in an exhibition in Milan

NEW TECHNOLOGY

Ceramics – a curious middle ground between functional object and sculpture. Ceramicists created expensive and figural sculptures. Factory ceramics was created for the growing demand for well-designed home ware. Glass – designers in other fields woke up to a new world of possibilities. Post modern glass is brightly coloured, playful and often witty. The United States and Italy lend the way in innovation of glass. Lighting – became important and exciting.

20TH CENTURY

Now providing us with its own range of collectable items. No longer are people looking exclusively for furniture, glass and china produced before 1900, now we are just interested in discovering the antiques of the future – objects with their own distinctive designs and patterns.
Now with modern interiors and even in older houses – people don’t want to clutter up their living space with heavy antique furniture or objects d’art, they prefer clean, minimalist pieces from the middle of the 20th century. These are collectables that don’t fall under the over 100 years old role by which antiques are commonly defined.

VINTAGE

A time origin of lasting interest and important, classic.

COLLECTABLES

Any object regarded as being of interest to a collector.
